Sir George Murray, while serving in the campaign against the French in Egypt, found himself and the men under his command in desperate need of water. He was near Alexandria, and realized he was in the same place where Julius Caesar had found himself in similar difficulties nearly two millennia before. He flicked through the copy of the Roman general’s writings that he always had with him, and discovered that Caesar’s men had found water at a particular depth underground. Murray set his men to digging, and sure enough they struck water.
